How Long From Amman To Petra? 3–3.5 h, Four Ways

Two roads leave Amman for the south. The Desert Highway (Route 15) is 235 km of straight, fast, featureless dual carriageway: 3 to 3.5 hours with one coffee stop. Every tour on this site uses it at least one way, and the JETT bus uses it both ways. If you are doing Petra in a day, this is the road, and the arithmetic of the day — 06:30 pickup, inside Petra by about 10:00 — depends on it.

The King's Highway (Route 35) is the old road through the hills: Madaba, Mount Nebo, the Wadi Mujib canyon, Kerak castle, Dana. It is 4 to 5 hours of driving without stops and a full day with them. It is worth doing once, with a driver or a rental, on a trip that does not need to be inside Petra before noon. Several 2- and 3-day tours drive it southbound and return on the Desert Highway; the tour pages say which.

The honest verdict: Desert Highway down, King's Highway only if you have a spare half-day and a reason to stop. Nobody has ever been sorry to arrive at Petra an hour earlier.

What the bus costs in practice is the day's shape. You arrive at Petra around late morning, which is fine for the Siq and the Treasury and tight for the Monastery, and you leave when the coach leaves, not when you are done. The full DIY day — bus both ways, the ticket (50 JOD with a night in Jordan, 90 without), lunch — comes to ≈ 70–110 JOD, or $99–155. The $84 private tour now comes in under that range; the difference is a car at your hotel door at 06:30 and your own timetable inside.

The bus is the right answer for one traveller on a budget who is staying a night in Wadi Musa anyway. For two or more people on a day return, a taxi or the private tour costs about the same per head and gives back three hours.

A taxi from Amman to Petra is 70–100 JOD per car, one way, negotiated before you get in; your hotel will call one and quote the price. It is the same 3–3.5 hours as a tour, without the return built in — a driver who waits and brings you back is a different negotiation, and at that point the $84 private day tour is usually cheaper and includes the pickup.

A rental is 25–30 JOD a day from the Amman agencies, plus fuel and parking at the Petra visitor centre. Driving in Jordan is straightforward outside Amman; the Desert Highway is signed in English. Rent if you want the King's Highway at your own speed or are continuing to Wadi Rum and Aqaba. Do not rent for a Petra day return; the tour is less effort for the same money.

The airport case is its own thing. The private transfer from Queen Alia International to Petra is $93 per vehicle, about 3 hours, and it is per vehicle, not per person: four people pay $23 each.
