Aqaba, Jordan: Past Petra, Not Beside It

Aqaba is Jordan's only coast — the Red Sea, at the bottom of the country, about 4 hours from Amman. The number that matters if you are planning Petra: its airport is 129 km from Petra, which puts Petra roughly two thirds of the way down. Aqaba is where you carry on to, or where you fly in from. It is not a side trip from a Petra day.

129km to Petra

From King Hussein International, the airport at Aqaba. Just under two hours.

01The answer, before the article

The Far End Of The Same Road

Petra sits between Amman and Aqaba. Nothing that goes to Aqaba and back in a day gives you Petra as well.

Both figures are Visit Jordan's own: "approximately 4 hours from the capital of Amman" on their Aqaba page, and King Hussein International airport at "about 129 kilometres" from Petra on their airports page. We do not print an Amman-to-Aqaba distance, because we did not find one on a source worth citing — the hours are what the authority publishes.

03The geometry

Petra Is On The Way

364km, roughly

Amman to Petra to Aqaba's airport, added up along the road.

Jordan is long and thin, and almost everything a visitor wants is on one line down it: Amman at the top, Petra 235 km south, Wadi Rum 110 km east of Petra, and Aqaba at the bottom on the Red Sea. Aqaba's airport is 129 km from Petra, which is the figure that tells you what shape your trip has to be.

It means Aqaba is never a detour. Either you are driving past Petra to reach it, or you have flown into it and are driving up. What it is not is something you add to a day trip: a Petra day from Amman is already six or seven hours in a vehicle before Aqaba is mentioned.

04The arithmetic

A Night In Aqaba Is A Night In Jordan

40JOD saved

The gate drops from 90 to 50 once you have slept anywhere in the country.

The Petra ticket has two prices and the difference is not where you sleep but whether you have slept. A night in Aqaba counts exactly as much as a night in Wadi Musa: the gate is 50 JOD instead of 90.

So if Aqaba is already in your trip, the expensive same-day ticket is not your problem — you are on the 50 JOD tier by the time you reach the gate. The entry-fee guide has the tiers and the Jordan Pass arithmetic in full.

05What you get

A Working Port With A Reef Under It

3JOD

Aqaba Castle — the one ticketed site in the city.

Aqaba is a port and a town, not a resort strip, and the thing people come for is under the water: the Red Sea reef starts a few metres out and the diving and snorkelling are the reason the flights exist. On land there is the castle at 3 JOD and not a great deal else.

We are not going to pretend that is a rival to Petra. It is a place to stop moving for two days after the driving, and on this site it appears on exactly one tour — the five-day loop — because nothing shorter reaches the bottom of the country and comes back.

07Every answer carries a figure

Aqaba, Answered Short Answered Short

How Far Is Aqaba From Petra?

King Hussein International airport, at Aqaba, is about 129 km from Petra — just under two hours by road, per Visit Jordan.

How Long Is Amman To Aqaba?

About 4 hours, which is what Visit Jordan publishes. They give no distance in kilometres and neither do we.

Can I Visit Aqaba And Petra In One Day?

Not from Amman. Petra alone is six to seven hours of road on a day trip, and Aqaba is a further 129 km past it.

Does A Night In Aqaba Cut My Petra Ticket?

Yes. A night anywhere in Jordan puts you on the 50 JOD tier instead of 90 — the rule is whether you have slept in the country, not where.

Is There Anything To See In Aqaba Itself?

The reef, mainly. On land there is Aqaba Castle at 3 JOD. It is a place to stop, not a second Petra.

129 km Past Petra. One Tour Goes That Far.

Yalla [let's go]. And a night down there costs the same 40 JOD off your ticket as any other.
