أهلاً وسهلاً ahlan wa sahlan [welcome] · guide · the route through the hours
From Amman you get about four hours inside Petra on a day trip: the Siq (1.2 km, 20–25 min), the Treasury, the Street of Façades and the Royal Tombs, 6–8 km on foot. The Monastery (~800 steps, 45–60 min up) does not fit unless you sleep in Wadi Musa.
A full Petra day. The Siq alone is 1.2 km each way.
01The answer, before the article
Walk to the Treasury first, then as far as the Royal Tombs, and turn back at 14:00. The Monastery is a second day.
Times marked ≈ follow from the 06:30 pickup and 3–3.5 h on the Desert Highway; walking times are from the visitor-centre map.

03The first 1.2 km
20–25 min each way; shade until about 10:00.
Every visit begins with 1.2 km of fault 3–12 m wide, and everything else on the day is measured from its far end. Twenty to twenty-five minutes down at a walking pace; the same back, uphill, at the hot end of the day. Budget it twice.
The Siq is shaded until mid-morning, which is the one argument for the 06:30 pickup nobody makes: you walk in cool and walk out in the ochre hour. The horse ride to the Siq mouth is included in the ticket; the cart beyond it is a separate, negotiated fare.
04The honest no
45–60 min up from the Basin. Not on a day trip.
Ad Deir is 45–60 minutes up about 800 rock-cut steps from the Qasr al-Bint basin, which is itself 40 minutes past the Treasury. Round trip from the Siq mouth: two and a half hours you do not have. Every day-trip listing that promises it is promising a jog.
If the Monastery is the reason you are coming, the answer is a night in Wadi Musa: the ticket drops to 50 JOD and you walk in at opening. The 2- and 3-day tours on the catalog print which mornings they give you.
05The only place a product belongs

06Every answer carries a figure
The core, yes: Siq, Treasury, Street of Façades, Royal Tombs — 6–8 km on foot in about four hours from Amman.
1.2 km, 20–25 min each way.
Not realistically: ~800 steps, 45–60 min up, 2.5 h round trip from the Siq mouth.
About 10:00 with the 06:30 pickup.
90 JOD same day, 50 JOD with a night in Jordan.
For a first look, yes. For Petra, no — which is why the 2-day loops exist.
