Petra is far bigger than the photo of the Treasury suggests — a whole rock-cut city spread across a valley, with trails climbing to tombs and monasteries on the ridges above. You can see the highlights in a day, but you will walk a lot and skip the far corners. Here is a realistic one-day plan, and an honest note on what a day trip from Amman leaves out.
The classic route, in order
- Visitor Centre → the Siq — a 1.2 km walk through a towering, narrow gorge. Allow 20–40 minutes; it is the dramatic build-up to the Treasury.
- The Treasury (Al-Khazneh) — the famous facade at the end of the Siq. Early morning and late afternoon light are best, and crowds are thinnest first thing.
- Street of Facades & the Theatre — royal tombs carved in rows, and a Roman-era amphitheatre cut into the rock.
- The Royal Tombs — a climb rewarded with the day's best wide view over the valley.
- Colonnaded Street & the Great Temple — the flat heart of the old city, an easy walk.
- The Monastery (Ad-Deir) — the other giant facade, reached by roughly 800 rock-cut steps. Budget 2–3 hours round trip from the valley floor.

Is one day enough?
For the signature sights — the Siq, the Treasury, the Royal Tombs — one day is genuinely enough, and most visitors leave happy. What a single day struggles to fit is the Monastery: those 800 steps take a couple of hours you may not have, especially on a day trip.
Coming from Amman means about three hours of driving each way. Even with an early start you realistically get 5–6 hours inside Petra — enough for the highlights, but the Monastery becomes a rush or a miss. If it is on your list, an overnight tour or a 2-day ticket is the honest answer.
A workable one-day timeline from Amman
Leave Amman by ~07:00, reach Petra around 10:00, walk the Siq to the Treasury before the midday heat, work down the main street and up to the Royal Tombs, break for lunch, then decide: push for the Monastery, or take the afternoon light back at the Treasury. Aim to start walking out by mid-afternoon.
