Petra Entry Fee: 50 Or 90 JOD, And Why

The 90 JOD rate exists for one kind of visitor: the day-tripper who crosses from Israel at Wadi Araba or lands at Aqaba on a cruise, sees Petra, and leaves. Jordan would rather you stayed, so one night anywhere in the country — Amman included — drops the ticket to 50 JOD. The gate asks for your passport and looks for the entry stamp date; a hotel booking is sometimes requested, rarely checked.

This matters for our readers because almost everyone starting in Amman has slept in Jordan. If you arrived yesterday and take the private day trip this morning, you pay 50 JOD, not 90. The 90 JOD case is narrower than the internet makes it sound: it is the traveller who lands at Queen Alia at 05:00 and drives straight to Petra, or who is doing Petra as an excursion from Eilat or Taba.

Where it bites is the airport pickup. The $84 private day tour collects at Queen Alia International Airport; if that is your first hour in Jordan, the gate treats you as a same-day visitor. Land the evening before, sleep once, and the same tour costs you 40 JOD less at the gate — more than a third of the tour price.

The Jordan Pass is a government bundle: your Petra ticket, entry to about forty other sites (Jerash, Wadi Rum, the Amman Citadel), and — if you stay at least three nights — the 40 JOD tourist visa fee waived. It costs 70 JOD for one Petra day, 75 for two, 80 for three, and must be bought online before you arrive.

The arithmetic is short. With three nights, the one-day pass at 70 JOD replaces a 50 JOD ticket plus a 40 JOD visa: 90 JOD of fees for 70, a saving of 20 JOD before you have entered anything else. Add one Wadi Rum entry (5 JOD) or Jerash (10 JOD) and it widens. Under three nights the visa is not waived, and the pass is 70 JOD against a 50 JOD ticket — you lose 20 JOD unless you visit 20 JOD of other sites.

Nationalities that do not pay the 40 JOD visa, and travellers on a pre-arranged group visa, get less from the pass; check your case on jordanpass.jo before buying. The pass is valid for twelve months from purchase and two weeks from first use; jordanpass.jo states the current terms.

The day ticket covers the site from the visitor centre to the Monastery and back, including the horse ride down the first 800 m that is nominally "included" but tipped in practice. It does not cover Petra by Night (17 JOD; Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, 20:30–22:30), which is a separate ticket sold at the visitor centre the same day. A licensed guide inside the site is a separate hire, at the official rate posted at the visitor centre.

Nor does any ticket price include the getting there. The cheapest honest total for a day from Amman is the JETT bus (10 JOD each way, about 4 h) plus the ticket and lunch: ≈ 70–110 JOD, or $99–155, depending on which ticket tier you fall into. The $84 private tour now undercuts that range and adds a door-to-door car; the tour pages print the same arithmetic per product.
