Petra By Night: Three Nights A Week, 17 JOD

Around 1,500 candles down the Siq to the Treasury, 20:30 to 22:30, on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday only. It is a separate 17 JOD ticket, it is not covered by your day ticket or the Jordan Pass, and no day trip from Amman gets you back for it — by half past eight you are three hours up the Desert Highway.

17JOD, separate

Not covered by the day ticket, and not by the Jordan Pass.

01The answer, before the article

Three Nights, One Ticket, One Condition

You have to be staying at the gate. That is the whole logistics problem, and it is why this is a two-day trip and not an evening.

Days and times are set by the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority and change with the season and the weather. Confirm on the day; the Siq closes to the event in heavy rain.

03The part that decides it

You Have To Be Sleeping At The Gate

3h each way

Amman to Petra. The event starts at 20:30 and ends at 22:30.

The arithmetic is short. The event runs 20:30 to 22:30. Amman is 235 km and 3–3.5 hours away. A day trip that leaves Amman at 06:30 has you home before the candles are lit, and there is no evening departure that makes it work.

So Petra by Night means a night in Wadi Musa, the town at the gate — which is also what drops your day ticket from 90 JOD to 50. The one tour on this site built around the event does exactly that.

04What you actually get

Candles, And About Two Hours

1.2km of Siq

Walked in the dark, lit by candle bags on the ground.

You walk the 1.2 km of the Siq by candlelight — paper bags weighted with sand, on the ground, both sides — and come out at the Treasury, which is lit and surrounded by more of them. There is Bedouin music and tea, and then you walk back up.

It is not a tour of Petra. You see the Siq and the Treasury and nothing else, and the site is dark. It is a good evening and it is not a substitute for a day inside.

05The honest bit

17 JOD, And A Night You Were Paying For

0included in the pass

The Jordan Pass covers the day gate. It does not cover this.

Taken on its own, 17 JOD for two hours of the Siq and the Treasury is fair. Taken as a reason to add a night in Wadi Musa it is a poor argument — but you are probably adding that night anyway, because it halves the day ticket.

Weather cancels it. The Siq is a flood channel and the event does not run in heavy rain, which in winter is a real possibility. Nobody will tell you until the day.

07Every answer carries a figure

Petra By Night, Answered Short

What Nights Is Petra By Night?

Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 20:30 to 22:30. Those are the only three, and heavy rain cancels.

How Much Is The Petra By Night Ticket?

17 JOD, about $24. It is separate from the day ticket and it is not covered by the Jordan Pass.

Can I Do It On A Day Trip From Amman?

No. The event starts at 20:30 and Amman is 3–3.5 hours away; a day trip is back in the city long before it. You need a night in Wadi Musa.

Is It Worth It?

For two hours of the Siq and the Treasury by candlelight, yes at 17 JOD. As a reason to add a night, it is thin — but that night also halves your day ticket, which changes the sum.

Do I Still Need A Day Ticket?

Yes, if you want to see Petra in daylight. This ticket buys the evening and nothing else.

Three Nights A Week, And You Must Be There For Them.

Yalla [let's go]. The night that gets you in is the same night that halves your day ticket.
