Getting from Amman to Petra

The most-asked questions about the journey — answered.

01

How far is Petra from Amman?

Petra is about 235 km (146 miles) south of Amman, Jordan’s capital. By road, the drive takes roughly 3 hours via the Desert Highway (Highway 15), the fastest and most direct route. The gateway town to Petra is called Wadi Musa, where the Petra Visitor Center is located.

The alternative scenic route — the King’s Highway through Madaba, Karak, and Dana — covers a similar distance but takes 4 to 4.5 hours because of the winding mountain roads and viewpoints.

02

How do you get from Amman to Petra?

There are four main ways to travel from Amman to Petra:

  • Private tour or transfer — the most flexible option. Door-to-door pickup, your own driver, and the freedom to stop along the way. This is what this tour provides.
  • JETT bus — the budget public option. One air-conditioned bus departs Amman each morning (around 6:30 AM) and takes about 4 hours.
  • Rental car — full independence, around 3 hours via the Desert Highway. Jordan drives on the right; roads are well-maintained.
  • Taxi — possible but expensive for the distance (typically 60–90 JOD / $85–130 one way), and you’d need to arrange a return.
03

How far is Petra from Queen Alia Airport?

Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) sits south of Amman, on the way to Petra — which works in your favor. The airport is about 209 km from Petra, a drive of roughly 2.5 hours via the Desert Highway. This tour can pick you up directly from the airport, so you can head straight to Petra after landing.

Route Distance Drive time
Amman → Petra (Desert Highway)~235 km~3 hours
Amman → Petra (King’s Highway, scenic)~280 km~4–4.5 hours
Queen Alia Airport → Petra~209 km~2.5 hours
Petra → Wadi Rum~110 km~1.5–2 hours

“Perfect day trip — our driver picked us up right on time and got us to Petra early before the crowds. Having a private car meant we could set our own pace. Wadi Rum in the afternoon was the perfect contrast. Long day but completely worth it.”

Petra & Wadi Rum Day Tour FAQ

Everything travelers ask before booking a Petra day trip from Amman.

One day is enough to see the highlights of both — the Treasury, Royal Tombs, and main trail at Petra (about 3 hours), plus a desert visit and optional jeep safari in Wadi Rum. It’s a full, fast-paced day.

If you want to climb to the Monastery at Petra or sleep in a desert camp under the stars, consider a 2-day tour instead. But for travelers short on time, a day tour covers the essentials of both icons.

About 3 hours inside Petra. That’s enough to walk the Siq, reach the Treasury (Al-Khazneh), see the Royal Tombs, and explore the main valley. It is not enough for the Monastery climb, which adds 2–3 hours round trip.

It depends on the option. Option 2 includes Petra and Wadi Rum entry tickets plus the jeep safari. Option 1 (transport only) does not — you pay the Petra entry fee (50 JOD / $70) at the gate, or use a Jordan Pass which covers it.

A one-way taxi from Amman to Petra typically costs 60–90 JOD ($85–130), and you’d need to arrange the return separately. A private day tour is usually better value because it includes the round trip, waiting time, and a driver who knows the route — often for a similar or lower total cost when split between travelers.

Yes. The Desert Highway is a well-maintained main road and the route is straightforward. Jordan is considered very safe for tourists. That said, many travelers prefer a private driver so they can rest during the 3-hour journey and not worry about navigation, fuel stops, or the return drive after a long day.

Yes — airport pickup is included at no extra cost. The airport is about 209 km from Petra (~2.5 hours), and it’s on the way south, so you can head straight to Petra after landing. Just provide your flight details when booking.

It’s fully private — just your group in a private air-conditioned vehicle with your own driver. No sharing with strangers, no fixed group schedule. You can adjust timing and stops as you go.

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are ideal — mild temperatures for walking Petra and comfortable desert conditions. Summer can be very hot at midday; winter is quieter but cooler. The tour runs year-round.
